Understanding Prontosan®: The Science Behind Better Wound Healing

Why Wound Cleansing Matters

Before a wound can heal, it must first be clean and balanced. Chronic and acute wounds often develop slough, necrotic tissue, and bacterial biofilm — invisible layers that delay healing and increase infection risk.
Traditional saline cleansing simply rinses the surface, but modern wound management focuses on biofilm disruption and wound bed preparation to create the optimal environment for tissue regeneration.

The Innovation Behind Prontosan®

Developed by B. Braun Medical, Prontosan® is a clinically proven wound cleansing system combining polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) and betaine.
PHMB acts as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that destroys bacterial membranes while remaining gentle on tissue.
Betaine is a mild surfactant that reduces surface tension, lifting debris, denatured proteins, and lipids from the wound.
Together they remove and prevent biofilm, rebalance the wound environment, and accelerate healing.

Clinical Proof & Global Experience

A large clinical study by Bellingeri et al. (2016) found that Prontosan® significantly improved wound healing and reduced inflammation compared with saline.
Across hospitals in Europe and Australia, case studies have shown rapid recovery in venous leg ulcers, burns, and post-surgical wounds when Prontosan® was used consistently for cleansing and debridement.
Patients reported reduced exudate, faster epithelialisation, and improved comfort during dressing changes.

 How to Use Prontosan®

  1. Cleanse – Irrigate the wound thoroughly with Prontosan® Solution to loosen debris and dressing residue.

  2. Soak – Apply gauze soaked in solution for 1–10 minutes depending on wound type.

  3. Debride – Gently remove slough with the Prontosan® Debridement Pad in circular motions.

  4. Dress – Apply Prontosan® Gel or Gel X and cover with a suitable secondary dressing.
No rinsing is needed before dressing.

The Prontosan® Product Range

Prontosan® Wound Irrigation Solution – cleanses and hydrates wounds of all types.
Prontosan® Wound Gel – ideal for deep or tunnelling wounds requiring moisture balance.
Prontosan® Wound Gel X – thicker formulation for large or exuding wounds, maintaining a moist environment for up to 72 hours.
Prontosan® Debridement Pad – designed for gentle, effective mechanical biofilm removal.

Each product reduces trauma during dressing changes, minimises odour, and supports a cleaner wound bed.
