Determining Sebum on Skin Surface, Scalp and Hair
For more than 30 years the Sebumeter® has provided the worldwide most used method to reproducibly and accurately determine the sebum level of the skin surface, as well as on scalp and hair. This is documented by the numerous mentions in scientific literature in which the terms "sebumetry" and sebum measurements are inseparable.
Advantages of the Sebumeter®
- The special tape only reacts to the skin sebum independent on the water content.
- It allows fairly quick and very easy measurements to avoid occlusion.
- A zero calibration before each measurement provides highest accuracy.
- The probe is small and lightweight for easy handling and measurement on all body sites.
- The spring in the head of the cartridge ensures constant pressure on the skin enabling exact, reproducible measurements.

The Sebumeter® SM 815 is available as stand-alone device, in the Derma Unit SSC 3, or built-in in the MPA systems (please see details in Basic Probe Systems).
Measurement Principle
The measurement is based on grease spot photometry. The mat tape of the Sebumeter® SM 815 is brought into contact with skin or hair. It becomes transparent according to the sebum on the surface of the measurement area. Then the tape is inserted into the aperture of the device and the transparency is measured by a photocell. The light transmission represents the sebum content.
The Probe (Cartridge)
The measuring head of the cartridge exposes a 64 mm2 measuring section of the mat tape. For a measurement the tape is moved forward by a trigger at the side of the cartridge to expose a new section of tape. The used tape is rewound inside the cartridge. One cartridge can be used for approx. 400 measurements. The scale from 1-0 on the trigger shows how much of the tape is still unused. When exhausted, the cartridge is simply replaced for reasons of hygiene.
Fields of Application
There are many fields of application where the sebum content plays a major role.
- It is important for claim support and efficacy testing of all kinds of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products (especially cleansers, anti-acne products, shampoos and hair care, products for oily skin).
- Typical claims (examples) substantiated with the Sebumeter®: against oily skin/hair/scalp, anti-dandruff, anti-acne, cleaning/purifying, against imperfections, oil restoring, soothing, nourishing, rich, balancing, normalizing, protecting, pore refining/pore activity decreasing and many more.
- It is used as standard in dermatological basic research in humans and animals.
