FAQ
A Mickey PEG Tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) is a medical procedure in which a tube is inserted through the abdomen and into the stomach. This tube is used to provide nutrition and hydration to patients who are unable to eat or drink by mouth. The tube is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen and is held in place by a small balloon at the end of the tube. The procedure is commonly referred to as a "Mickey PEG" because the tube used is often referred to as a "Mickey button" or "Mickey tube." This procedure is most often used for patients with neurological conditions such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, or dementia, as well as patients with cancer or other conditions that prevent them from eating or drinking by mouth.
Mic-key buttons, also known as gastrostomy buttons or G-buttons or PEG Tube, are used as a way to provide nutrition to individuals who have difficulty swallowing or who have a condition that prevents them from eating normally. The frequency at which a Mic-key button should be changed depends on the individual's needs and the recommendations of their healthcare provider. Typically, Mic-key buttons are changed every 3-4 weeks, but this can vary depending on factors such as the individual's rate of growth, infection risk, and overall health. It is important to follow the advice of the healthcare provider to ensure proper care and prevent complications.
PEG Tube (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy tube) and NG tube (Nasogastric tube) are both feeding tubes used to deliver nutrition to the digestive system, but they differ in placement and method of insertion:
- PEG Tube is surgically placed directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall, and is used for long-term feeding support.
- NG tube is inserted through the nose and down the esophagus into the stomach, and is used for short-term feeding support or for medication administration.
- Both tubes have different risks, benefits and indications for use, and the decision for which one to use is based on the patient's individual needs and conditions.
A PEG Tube is inserted using an endoscopic procedure. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and involves the following steps:
- An endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera, is passed through the mouth and into the stomach.
- The insertion site is marked and cleaned.
- A small incision is made in the abdomen, and the endoscope is used to guide the PEG Tube through the incision and into the stomach.
- The PEG Tube is secured in place and the incision is closed.
- The PEG Tube is connected to a bag outside the body to allow for feeding or medication administration.
- The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes and patients may need to stay in the hospital for a short period of time for observation and recovery.
